At Burroughs Community School (1601 W 50th St, Minneapolis, MN 55419)
On Saturday, October 11, more than 120 community members joined Eureka Recycling and the Minnesota Zero Waste Coalition for the first ever Minnesota Zero Waste Fest! The festival brought together advocates and neighbors to explore what a just and sustainable zero waste future could look like for Minnesota.
On Saturday, October 11, Mukwa had the honor of participating in the Minnesota Zero Waste Fest, hosted by the Minnesota Zero Waste Coalition at the Burroughs Community School in Minneapolis, MN. This event focused on initiatives aimed at reducing waste, recycling, and reusing materials, providing a platform for community engagement and education.
Siblings Gina and Joey Peltier represented Mukwa at the event, setting up a table near the entrance where they shared information about the organization and distributed new Mukwa stickers. The community meal was a highlight, featuring delicious locally catered dishes, including plantains and Cajun chicken. The coalition's commitment to sustainability was evident, as they provided reusable plates and utensils, which were washed on-site for future use, although Gina may have found the food a bit too spicy.
Gina and Joey concluded the festival with a panel discussion that explored the themes of reuse and repair as not only waste management strategies but also as forms of cultural resistance, economic empowerment, and environmental custodianship. They incorporated discussions on anti-caste and Indigenous Just Transition themes, and those interested can view the panel can watch below and watch the other panels on the Zero Waste Coalition's website for more insights.
